Misty May
Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh opened the AVP Tour season with a victory Sunday, beating second-seeded Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh 21-15, 17-21, 15-13 in the AVP Gold Crown Miami Open.
May-Treanor and Walsh avenged a semifinal loss to Youngs and Branagh last year.
"You wouldn't like it to be that close, but a win's a win, and we'll take it," May-Treanor said. "It's nice when you can come back against a great team like that. Usually Nicole and EY, when they've got you down, pretty much you're down. So it's nice, and hopefully we'll gain experience from it."
In the men's final, top-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers successfully defended their title, beating Nick Lucena and Sean Scott 21-14, 21-13.
Misty May-Treanor (born July 30, 1977) is an American professional beach volleyball player. She was born and grew up in Santa Monica, California and graduated from California State University, Long Beach, where she won a national championship, received the Athlete of the Year Award in 1998, and was on the All American First Team for three years for indoor volleyball. May-Treanor currently resides in Hermosa Beach, California. In 2003, May and her new teammate Kerri Walsh were named the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Team of the Year after having an undefeated season at 39-0, winning eight tournaments.
In the 2000 Summer Olympics, May teamed with Holly McPeak, a highly ranked U.S. beach volleyball player, and they finished in fifth place. In the 2004 Summer Olympics with teammate Kerri Walsh, the number one ranked player, May won Gold after she and Walsh defeated the Brazilian team in the finals. McPeak teamed up with Elaine Youngs and won the bronze medal, after losing to May and Walsh in the semifinal round. May and Walsh did not lose a single set in their seven matches over the 2004 Olympics.
During the offseason, May-Treanor coaches women's volleyball at Irvine Valley College as an assistant coach. After her volleyball career, she plans to earn a Master's degree, coach volleyball at the junior college level, and spend time with her family and two dogs. In November 2004, she married Florida Marlins catcher Matt Treanor. She is the first cousin of tennis player Taylor Dent. Misty appeared on NBC's game show Identity on April 6, 2007. She posed as "Born In 1977."
